How to Set a Custom Homepage and Startup Page in Chrome

Want to change what Chrome opens to? Chrome lets you set a custom homepage and startup page, but extensions are required for new tab pages.

The fast way

Don't see a home button? Keep reading.

Full setup

1. Enable and set the home button

  1. Open Chrome Settings (click the menu (⋮) then Settings, or paste chrome://settings/appearance in the address bar)
  2. Under Appearance, toggle Show home button on
  3. Select Enter custom web address
  4. Enter your custom URL (e.g., https://nugs.gg/start)

2. Set your startup page

  1. Go to On startup in the sidebar (or paste chrome://settings/onStartup in the address bar)
  2. Select Open a specific page or set of pages
  3. Click Add a new page
  4. Enter your custom URL and click Add

Done

Restart Chrome. You should see your custom homepage. (Need one? Try nugs.gg/start 😉)

What about new tabs?

Chrome doesn't let you change the new tab page without an extension. When you press Ctrl+T (or Cmd+T on Mac), you'll still see Chrome's default page.

If you want a custom new tab page, you'll need a "New Tab Redirect" extension from the Chrome Web Store.

Troubleshooting

Chrome homepage not working? Check that "Show home button" is toggled on in Appearance settings, and that you entered a valid URL starting with "https://".

Chrome startup page not loading? Make sure you selected "Open a specific page or set of pages" (not "Open the New Tab page").
